Amazing Grace

PROJECT  OVERVIEW
Listen free to DEMO on SoundCloud

The first and most famous Amazing Grace lyrics were written in 1772 by Englishman John Newton (1725–1807) and published in 1779, with no music.

In 1835 Newton's words were fitted to the Scottish-American tune New Britain, which originated in the Appalachian region around 1830. This combination of words and music became very popular, especially in the USA.

I've modernised the lyrics in a similar fashion to my new arrangements of Greensleeves and Londonderry Air, borrowing a few words from Newton. Each of these songs will be published in multiple versions for different forces and with a choice of lyrics for different singers and audiences. See some of the new lyrics here.

The solo version of this arrangement was published in this book:

HMP 3223 Three Traditional Songs with inclusive lyrics. Solo voice with piano. Medium voice. Beside the Foyle (D flat major; same tune as Danny Boy); Amazing Grace, the Sweet Sound of Children (Einstein was a Refugee) (G major); Greensleeves In Love (E major/E minor). Limited edition of fifty (50) copies, but all these songs have since been revised; new editions due in 2022.
